INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer was involved in a shooting on Indianapolis' east side Wednesday afternoon.

Police say an officer was responding to a call on the 100 block of N. Denny Street just after 3 p.m. in reference to a father who had stolen a cell phone and debit card from his daughter.

While the officer was trying to arrest the suspect, police say a second unidentified man attempted to grab the officer's handgun out of its holster. The two struggled and the officer was able to maintain control of his handgun, firing two shots at the suspect.

That man was transported to Eskenazi Health in serious condition.  His identity has not been released.

Police said the officer was not injured during the shooting.

Witnesses were taken down to IMPD headquarters for questioning.

The officer involved in the shooting is a three-year veteran of IMPD. He will be placed on Administrative Leave, which is standard procedure during any officer involved shooting. He will also receive coping services and IMPD's wellness program will be available to address any concerns the officer may have.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
