SWEETSER, Ind. – Police are working to track down a woman pictured in surveillance images. They say she is linked to the unthinkable theft of items from mourners at a cemetery.
As family was mourning a loved one at Maple Grove Cemetery in Sweetser, a woman went from car to car, opening doors and stealing purses and other items.
Police believe the woman may have followed the procession to the cemetery just to pilfer the mourners’ cars.
More than $1,600 in cash was taken. And since the thefts, police say $6,000 to $8,000 in checks have been cashed, taken from a family already in pain.
It happened last month, but no arrests have been made, so now we’re seeing surveillance images of the possible thief.
Plus, authorities are now offering a $1,000 Crime Stoppers reward for anyone with information that will lead to the arrest of the thief.
Images of the suspect are pulled from bank drive-thrus in Hamilton County. And investigators believe she’s doing something very specific in them.
“What (she) is doing is using victim’s license, sending that through the drive-thru,” Sweetser Police Deputy Marshal Ryan Hornback said. “(She is) making herself look like the person in the picture, (and) using the victims’ names to cash these checks.”
That suspect is believed to be driving a black Chrysler 300 with chrome wheels and trim.
Police are urging for the public’s health, but they’re also reminding us all to always lock our cars – don’t let your guard down.
