INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Public Schools began the year with fewer bus drivers than needed, and are looking to hire more staff.
The largest school district within the state is short about 30 bus drivers, said district Transportation Director Manuel Mendez. IPS started the school year with 120 drivers but Mendez said he would like to have at least 150.
“That's one of the issues that I would really like to find that sweet spot,” he said. “It's a nationwide issue. Driver shortage across the country."
Mendez said the shortage of drivers has impacted bus routes and school pick-up schedules. To help find a solution while in search of new drivers, the district hired a company to best utilize available routes.
"It's a very difficult job, but it's a rewarding job if you want to go in and drive the kids, get them to school safely,” he said.
