INDIANAPOLIS -- A program that offers help to ex-offenders is getting some help of it’s own from the city of Indianapolis.
The Isaiah Program received a $20,000 grant to help with their ex-offender rehabilitation program.
The program, operated by Brookside Community Church, offers housing and jobs to people after they get out of prison, to help get them back on their feet.
Calvin Henderson is an ex-offender and he says he wants to stay that way. Right now, he’s working at Recycle Force, trying to rebuild his life.
Henderson was a bank robber and he spent 40 years behind bars, but now, he’s taking the motors out of fans so they can be shipped away and refurbished.
“I feel like I have this last chance. Nothing bothers me. Everybody is OK with me. Don’t see nothing but goodness in everybody,” said Henderson.
Henderson lives at the Isaiah house with five other ex-offenders.
They’ve helped the men find jobs, and given them a place to live while they try to re-establish their lives.
Program directors say the grant will help them expand their program and help even more people.
The Indianapolis Foundation awarded $1.8 million in grants to 42 organizations in Marion County for crime prevention and re-entry.
