PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. – An overwhelming smell of yellow mustard led Indiana State Police to 48 pounds of marijuana inside a semi Thursday night.

The truck was traveling from California to Pennsylvania when a trooper pulled it over shortly after 6:30 p.m. for a routine safety inspection shortly after 6:30 p.m.

The trooper noticed the smell of what appeared to be yellow mustard. As he began to speak with the driver, 52-year-old Richard Sherman of El Cajon, Calif., he says he saw other signs of criminal activity.

The trooper searched the semi and found 36 individual packages of high grade marijuana covered in yellow mustard.

Police said the weight of each package ranged from 1.25 pounds to 1.50 pounds. They were estimated with a street value of $200,000.

Sherman was charged with dealing marijuana over 10 pounds and possession of marijuana over 10 pounds with prior offense.

He was taken to the Putnam County Jail.
