IUPUI welcomes new dorm, largest freshman class ever

INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI will have more than 2,000 students living on campus this year, as school officials say they're welcoming the largest freshman class ever.
At 3,700 students, the IUPUI freshman class of 2013 is the largest the school has ever seen, and a 15 percent increase from last year.
One of the reasons for the surge in enrollment is the opening of University Tower, a new dormitory set to house 560 students.
Kenda Hintz, 18, is one of the students who will be living in the new dorm, along with roommate Cassidy Wittrig, also 18. Both of them are excited that the building used to be a four-star hotel.
"I was obviously really excited about the hotel thing," Hintz said. "It was one of the reasons I came here."
"There is free laundry. There is an honors lounge on this floor. There's a nice gym," she said. "It's great."
Rebecca Porter, executive director of enrollment services, said the school's urban campus has been paying dividends as well.
"Our students can make real-world connections that you might not be able to find on another campus," Porter said. "We have a myriad of internships for students. We are nationally known for our service learning opportunities that put the students in the community doing that that relate to what they are learning."
