GREENWOOD, Ind. - Colts owner Jim Irsay is kicking off donations for a memorial award in honor of a Greenwood teacher killed in the Indianapolis home explosion.
The Jennifer and Dion Longworth Memorial Award has been established by the parent-teacher organization at Southwest Elementary, where Jennifer Longworth taught second grade.
Special Section: Indy Explosion
For the first 10 years, the $1,000 award will be given to one of Longworth's former students when they graduate from Greenwood High School and seek continuing education.
"It is our hope that the recipients of this honor will carry on the love Jennifer had for learning as they further their education beyond high school," the fund creators said.
After the first 10 years, recipients will be selected based on the established criteria by a panel of administration and staff at Southwest Elementary.
Irsay tweeted Thursday he had started off the fund with a donation, calling Jennifer Longworth a wonderful teacher.
"Two of her biggest passions were her students and the Indianapolis Colts. Jennifer's room was full Colts blue and white, and Colts gear was worn by virtually all students and staff on our first day back at school following the tragedy," the fund creators wrote. "Jennifer had a way of reaching students like no other teacher."
Donations to the Jennifer and Dion Longworth Memorial Award fund can be made to the Johnson County Community Foundation Longworth Fund at P.O. Box 217, Franklin, IN 46131.
