INDIANAPOLIS - Both the show choir, known as The Technicians, and the concert choir, known as The Tech Choir, at Indy’s Arsenal Tech High School are readying for big performances at Disney World in April.
"It's the trip of a lifetime,” said senior Zachory Stewart.
“A lot of the kids don't get to go out of state so just to hear we're performing at Disney World is just an outstanding opportunity and pleasure to perform there," said junior Jocelyn Robinson.
But time is running out to raise the more than $40,000 needed for the trip.
And now, the teens have a new voice in their fundraising efforts -- Colts owner Jim Irsay.
Irsay tweeted Wednesday to rally support for the choir, saying, "Inner-city Arsenal Tech H.S. Choir invited to perform Disney World in April, but need $$. I will help if u will!"
Irsay later tweeted again: "Let's get these kids to Orlando to represent INDY!!"
"I can't believe it," said Cindy Hartshorn, one of the two choir directors.
She has been watching her choir members work hard to both fine-tune their performances and raise money.
"We're always fighting a reputation of being a downtown urban school, and the trouble is, you don't hear about the good things, and these students work so hard," she said.
"It's like another family. Some kids don't have families at home, you know, when you come to school and think about choir, you always know you have family here," said Robinson.
"For a lot of kids, we come from different parts of the community. We're coming from the far west side of Indianapolis, south, north, east side. We're coming from all over, so it doesn't really matter who gives to us because they are always contributing to someone from their community," said Stewart.
