INDIANAPOLIS - A man who pleaded guilty to repeatedly stabbing a puppy will not be headed to prison.

John Madden, 22, was sentenced Monday to two years on work release, as well as mental health treatment. He cannot own or live with any animals during that time.

Madden admitted to stabbing a pit bull mix puppy nine times with a kitchen knife last summer, saying he wanted to put the puppy out of its misery.

The puppy, who was nicknamed Miracle by veterinary staff, was adopted by an Indianapolis police officer and his wife, and is full recovered.

The couple said they are satisfied with Madden's punishment.
