Water quality reigns supreme. That’s true across the globe, including in Greenwood. That’s why the city opened a brand new Stormwater Testing Lab & Nature Center.
It’s located at the corner of E. Main St. and S. Washington St, just south of the Children’s Garden Park. With a goal of giving residents first-hand experiences, the Nature Center will offer lessons on plants (both native to Indiana and invasive) and why keeping bodies of water clean is so important.
Students will be able to visit the center, as well as adults. Admission is free.
“Students will be in the creek with instructors, pulling water quality samples, catching insects and learning about the importance of trees and plant life along the banks," said Greenwood Mayor Mark Meyers.
“It’s an experience they won’t forget, but they’ll also have the why behind it,” he continued.
One key piece of this project is showing students how vegetation affects water supplies. City workers hope the less learned will help preserve clean water in central Indiana.
“Too often we see the complete removal of vegetation surrounding repaired creeks and streams. We want to show people that installing engineered systems isn’t necessary when existing large trees and native vegetation can do the work,” explained Stormwater Superintendent Chris Jones.
The City of Greenwood says parts of the Nature Center were paid for through a $5,000 PIG Difference grant. PIG Difference is an organization dedicated to restoring habitats.
The Stormwater Testing Lab and Nature Center is officially open. Greenwood celebrated its opening by inviting city employees and residents to experience the new facility.
