CARROLL COUNTY, Ind. -- You never know what kind of wildlife you're going to see as you drive through Indiana, but a Carroll County sheriff's deputy had to be surprised when he found a kangaroo in the road late Monday night.

According to the Indiana Going Blue Facebook page, deputies thought it was a prank call when dispatchers told them about the kangaroo.

Donna Cadwallader says she knows the call sounded like a prank too, Cadwallader is the person who called authorities, "Delphi Police Department. Yes, this is Donna Cadwallader, and I've got a kangaroo out here. You have a what? I'm not jokiing with you. I know it sounds crazy but it is a kangaroo."

Cadwallader says the kangaroo followed her to her back porch. She says he just wanted to cuddle and play, held onto her arm, licked her, and hopped through her yard.

"It was unbelievable. I'm still in shock over it, it was like this is unbelievable," said Cadwallader.

She says the kangaroo kept her company until Deputy Darron Giancola with the Carroll County Sheriff's Department picked up the marsupial around 11:30 p.m. and returned it to its owner down the street.

The dispatcher who took the call said on Facebook that the kangaroo belongs to someone local who keeps it as a pet. Lilly-Ann Nez said the owner settled for a kangaroo when he couldn't afford the zebra he wanted originally.

Shane Spence says his kangaroo is named Jack and he's doing just fine.

It's legal for Spence to have a kangaroo because the state doesn't require a permit to keep one.

The kangaroo is just one recent example of odd wildlife in Indiana.

In September, Indiana State Troopers found a two-foot alligator along I-465 on Indianapolis' southeast side.

Troopers say the gator had injuries consistent with falling or being thrown from a moving vehicle.

Unfortunately the alligator did not survive.
