INDIANAPOLIS -- Lady Gaga's message of kindness is falling on deaf ears in China.

Gaga appeared with the Dalai Lama at the U.S. Conference of Mayors last Sunday.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman responded to the meeting saying, "The purpose of his visits and activities in other countries is just to promote his proposal for Tibetan independence."

Beijing regularly vilifies the Tibetans' spiritual leader as a political figure who advocates splitting the Himalayan region of Tibet from the rest of China.

The Dalai Lama says he simply wants a higher degree of autonomy under Chinese rule.

After the meeting between the Dalai Lama and Gaga, The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television made it illegal for the pop star and her music from appear on the radio or TV in China. Her downloadable albums will be removed from online stores, according to the Washington Post.
