LAFAYETTE -  

The northern Indiana city of Lafayette could lose its daily Amtrak passenger service next year unless a funding dispute between state and federal officials is resolved.

Amtrak has confirmed that it plans to end the Hoosier State route that runs from Lafayette to Chicago effective Oct. 1, 2013, The Journal & Courier reported. 

Lafayette would lose four days and four nights of rail service it now enjoys as the Hoosier State stops in Lafayette during its run between Indianapolis and Chicago. The separate Cardinal train would continue to serve Lafayette three mornings and three nights a week on its route between Chicago and New York.

Officials say the Hoosier State and the Cardinal trains are both a convenience and an economic development tool for Lafayette and West Lafayette.
