Large sinkhole damages cars on Indianapolis' northeast side

No injuries reported

INDIANAPOLIS - Some drivers on the city's northeast side were detoured along their morning commute Wednesday after a sinkhole opened up on River Road Tuesday night damaging at least four cars, police said.

The sinkhole is just north of 86th Street, near the Fashion Mall at Keystone at the Crossing.

Police originally said the sinkhole had swallowed the cars, but it was later determined that the cars were only damaged from driving over the hole.

The sinkhole appeared to be several feet deep and nearly as wide as one driving lane.

No injuries were reported.

The Department of Public Works said the section of River Road has been closed, and will remain closed until the hole is repaired.

"I don't want to drive on this road anymore, even if they fix it, because its just like, I don't want that to happen again," one onlooker said.

Drivers should use Keystone Avenue as their detour to the west and Allisonville Road as their detour to the east. Access to subdivisions in the area are open.

Any residents typically using Stone Bridge Drive to access their homes will need to use Knights Bridge Boulevard off of 96th Street, DPW said.
