INDIANAPOLIS -- Showing students how they can succeed both in academics and athletics, Lawrence Central High School football players are mentoring students at Belzer Middle School.

The mentoring program is only one month old but students and players say they're getting a lot out of it.

Quarterback Donyell Meredith II says it makes him feel good to help the students.

Linebacker Cameron McGrone has 17 Division I scholarship offers and he takes time to help as well.

"All the colleges give me all the offers to come to their school. I hope they see that and they want to be like that. That would mean the world to me. A figure for some young kids to try to be like me," said McGrone

At least one of the students wants to follow in their footsteps.

"My goal is when I go to high school is to continue to play football and to be an academic and athletic leader in the school.  And if we still have that program to come over to the middle school and be a leader there too," said Steven Baker, 7th grader

The players visit the middle school classrooms two days a week.  The year-round program will be scaled back during the football season.
