INDIANAPOLIS - A Lawrence Central High School student was taken to the hospital after attempting suicide at school Friday morning, where she was later pronounced dead, a school spokeswoman said.
School officials offered few details, but they confirmed the involved student was a female freshman.
The school said counselors would be available for students at school Friday afternoon, and again on Saturday and Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"We are all devastated by the events of the day," the district's Chief Financial Officer Robin Phelps said in a written statement.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth ages 10 to 24 in the United States, according to April 2013 Center for Disease Control data.
The CDC reports about 157,000 youth need medical attention for self-inflicted injuries annually.
