Police searching for suspect in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Ind. - Police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot in the head during a robbery at an apartment in Lawrence early Tuesday, officials said.

About 7:30 a.m., at the Jamestown Apartments in the 4400 block of Duxbury Lane, a man approached another man warming up his van.

Police said a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and black pants shot the other man in the head before running away.

The man's fiancee ran outside when she heard the gunshot and found the man lying on the ground, police said. 

"As soon as he walked out of the house, she heard the shot. She ran outside to see what happened and she saw my friend on the (ground). She said was he was shot on the head," friend Martin Jayer said. 

The victim, later identified as Fernando Javier Garza, was rushed to Wishard Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Detectives described the suspect as a black man with dreadlocks, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black pants. He's about 6 feet tall in his late 20s to early 30s.

Police searched the area and said the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.
