LEBANON, Ind. - Officials with the Lebanon Community School Corporation confirmed on Thursday that a school nurse at Lebanon Middle School had been arrested.
Leah Rutan, 42, was arrested on charges of neglect of a dependent and other drug-related offenses.
School officials said Rutan, also a cheerleading coach, has been relieved of her duties and was on unpaid suspension until the investigation is complete.
Superintendent Robert Taylor said the alleged offenses did not happen on school property and had nothing to do with her job or responsibilities involving students.
"Safety is the first and foremost priority of our students, we take all allegations of this nature very seriously and respond in a very proactive manner. While we want to ensure we do our due diligence on behalf of our employees, we also want to make sure we guarantee the safety and well-being of all of our students as well. The actions we take are all focused on making sure students are our priority," Taylor said.
Officials said if Rutan is found guilty, the appropriate action will be taken.
