Federal prosecutors have filed charges against an Indiana postal service employee accused of stealing mail packages containing prescription medication.

Kevin R. Hicks, 53, is charged with theft of mail. The prescription medication was intended for armed forces veterans and was being sent by the Veterans Administration, according to Josh Minkler, acting U.S. attorney for Southern Indiana.

According to a news release issued by Minkler’s office, law enforcement officials began investigating the case when they determined that medication packages routed to zip codes in Southern Indiana and Central Kentucky “never made it to their destination.”

Hicks worked as a manager at the Evansville Postal Processing and Distribution Facility. Prosecutors allege in the indictment that he stole 23 packages of medications, “including hydrocodone, a pain relief medication, for personal use.”

If convicted the charge carries up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
