WESTFIELD, Ind. - A Westfield city councilman battling cancer died Saturday night at the age of 73, according to the City of Westfield.
City Council Vice President John Dippel died at IU North Hospital, leaving behind his wife, Marcyann, their five children, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Dippel was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He retired from Indian Bell/Ameritech after 34 years’ service and then served on the Westfield Town Council as well as the city council since 2007.
Dippel played a large role in Westfield becoming a city in 2008. He was a member of the financial committee and the Westfield Sport Commission, which helped with the planning and implementation of Grand Park.
“John Dippel's dedication and contributions to his beloved city of Westfield will be challenging to chronicle,” Mayor Andy Cook said. “John leaves behind a legacy in Westfield that can’t be replaced.”
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, with mass to follow. A memorial will be held at 1 p.m. at the Bridgewater Club.
