Looking ahead to 2016 legislative session

INDIANAPOLIS -- Lawmakers will return to the statehouse on Tuesday for a 10-week short session.

Debate over civil rights protections for the LGBT community is expected to dominate debate in 2016.

The senate president is backing a proposal to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

One bill would make it a crime to enter a public restroom designated for the opposite sex, which would address the concerns of religious conservatives.

Then, there's the ISTEP plus exam which has been plagued by scoring delays and criticisms on the length and difficulty between different versions of the test.

State lawmakers continue to assess the exam and whether to replace it.

They're also trying to figure out how to turn around a teacher shortage.

Republicans and democrats agree transportation funding needs to drive the discussion in the upcoming session but they'll have to work through four separate proposals for paying for the repairs totaling as much as $2 billion.

Lawmakers are also planning to discuss ways to curb the production of meth in Indiana.

House Speaker Brian Bosma says he'll back a proposal to make Sudafed available by prescription only.

A second plan would give pharmacists the right to refuse a sale based on a brief consultation with patients.
