Macy's is closing about 100 stores nationwide, the department store chain announced Thursday morning.

Of the 728 total stores, about 14 percent will be closed by early 2017, but Macy's hasn't said which stores will close.

There are 10 Macy's stores in Indiana, with locations in Indianapolis, Lafayette, Muncie, Bloomington, Terre Haute, Greenwood, Fort Wayne, Elkhart and Merrillville.

The chain will be looking into investing more into online shopping.

“We believe that this reduction of 100 locations in the short term will result in a more appropriate store portfolio for Macy’s in the longer term and help us to accelerate our progress in building a vibrant omnichannel brand experience," Macy's President Jeff Gennette said. "With this strategy, we will be able to reinvest in a more energized shopping experience in our remaining stores and elevate our total customer experience across all methods of shopping."

In the release, a Macy's spokesperson said employees will be treated with respect and openness. Employees displaced by the closings will be able to take positions in other stores, if possible.
