ANDERSON, Ind. -- An 8-year-old girl is in some big trouble after she stole her mother's jeep while they were out shopping and led police on a chase Friday.

The chase began on State Road 32 around 2:30 p.m. Police say the child drove from Anderson to Lapel.

Police spokesman Joel Sandefur says the girl was driving erratically at about 40 mph before police were able to box the Jeep in and forced it to stop outside the Ricker's convenience store in Lapel.

After the vehicle stopped, Sandefur said the girl hit a Lapel Police Department cruiser trying to put it in park, causing minor damage to the cruiser.

The girl then refused to get out of the vehicle and police had to break out a window and pull her from it.

The girl was taken into custody. It is unclear if anyone will face charges at this time.
