MADISON, Ind. -- Police in Madison, Indiana, were investigating the second explosion this month following an early morning blast near the home of an Indiana Superior Court judge.

The Madison Police Department said the explosion happened early Wednesday morning on the 100 block of Cherry Trace.

Officers from the Indiana State Police Explosive Ordinance Destruction team and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were called to assist local authorities

Madison Police Chief Dan Thurston told ABC-affiliate WHAS in Louisville that police believed the explosion was meant as a threat to the local criminal justice system.

“We are considering these explosions as a message and a direct threat to members of the criminal justice system in our local community,” said Thurston told WHAS. “If you are a neighbor or family member of a judge, prosecuting attorney, defense attorney, or police officer please be vigilant and observant in your area.”

The explosion on Cherry Trace was the second this month. On Sunday, March 6, another explosion was reported near the Madison City Hall parking lot.

Investigators determined an explosive device had been detonated near the entrance to the lot from Central Avenue.

Anyone with information about the explosions is asked to contact the Madison Police Department at 812-265-3347 or the ATF at 1-888-367-5762.
