ANDERSON, Ind. - Officials at the Hoosier Park casino and horse track in Anderson are trying to determine what caused a tractor that pulls the starting gate off the track to malfunction, interrupting a race and causing a jockey to be thrown and a horse to be injured.
The Herald Bulletin reported the race involving eight horses started out as normal, but the tractor that moves the gate malfunctioned after pulling it eight to 10 feet from the rail. The jockeys realized it after the last turn.
The jockeys were able to stop or avoid running into the gate, but one jockey was flipped over the railing on the inside part of the track. Hoosier Park spokesman Grant Scharton said one horse sustained a non-fatal injury.
