CAMBY, Ind. -- A Camby man is accused of trying to cut his unborn child out of his girlfriend using a machete.
According to the Morgan County Sheriff's Office, Garett Carpenter, 23, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon, and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
Detectives say Carpenter allegedly used meth and heroin before he attacked his pregnant girlfriend with a machete. According to the reports, Carpenter attempted stabbing the woman several times with a machete before he realized he was thrusting the handle-end of the weapon into her stomach.
After the woman escaped, Carpenter returned to the room with a bible and a box cutter before he was stopped by witnesses at the scene.
During the attack, Carpenter allegedly said, "the baby is a mistake," and "the baby was Satan." The woman was taken to a hospital and told police Carpenter, "didn't know what he was doing."
