INDIANAPOLIS - A speeding driver went around detour barricades on Interstate 65 and Interstate 70 and led Indiana State Police troopers on a chase that ended in a crash late Saturday night, police said.

The incident happened just after 11 p.m. as the troopers worked in the area affected by the Virginia Avenue overpass closure.

Trooper Mike McCreary said he saw a Ford Expedition northbound I-65 and clocked the SUV at 86 mph in a 50 mph zone.

"The Expedition drove around the detour barricades, nearly striking Cpl. (Wiley) Mimm's police car and continued westbound on I-70," ISP Sgt. Rich Myers said in a news release. "The driver failed to stop for officers and exited I-70 at Harding Street."

Police said the driver, Jeremiah Casmire, 31, of Indianapolis, went southbound on Harding and crashed into a bridge abutment at Kentucky Avenue and Belmont Street.

Casmire was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Information about his condition wasn't immediately available.

"Troopers at the scene of the crash reported observing signs and symptoms of impairment in the driver, and a blood draw was obtained," Myers said.

Charges against Casmire are pending.
