Police catch prisoner who escaped from custody in downtown Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man who escaped from police custody in downtown Indianapolis Wednesday afternoon has been recaptured.

Deputies of the Marion County Sheriff's Department caught Johnny Gamell in the 1200 E. 10th Street after he stole a bike and fled the scene. Police say he was originally arrested on a felony robbery charge. 

Gamell escaped after he was picked up from the Duvall Center (Marion County Community Corrections Residential Center), at 1848 Ludlow Avenue, and taken to the Arrestee Processing Center on the east end of downtown. 

An officer was injured during the pursuit, but is expected to be okay. 

He is now facing upgraded charges
