INDIANAPOLIS - A man died after being shot by police during a standoff Tuesday morning, officials said.
Police said emergency medical personnel were called to Turtle Creek Apartments in the 8200 block of Harcourt Road to assist a man who had difficulty breathing, but they left the apartment when they spotted a gun.
According to police, the man then holed up inside the apartment and became "volatile and noncompliant," so SWAT negotiators were called to the scene.
Police said the man came out of his apartment with a firearm several times while the SWAT crew was talking with him, and firing non-lethal rounds at him had no effect.
Police said the man then exited his apartment with a gun pointed at the officers, and he did not respond when police told him to drop the gun, so they fired several shots.
The man, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at St. Vincent hospital.
