INDIANAPOLIS - A man was fatally stabbed inside a motel on the city's west side early Tuesday, Indianapolis Metro Police Department officers said, and an Indianapolis man is being held on a preliminary murder charge.
The stabbing was reported just after 11 p.m. at the Gateway Motel near 17th Street and Lafayette Road after police found a 45-year-old man stabbed inside room No. 129.
The victim, Anthony Bankhead, was rushed to Eskenazi Health where he later died, IMPD dispatchers said.
Investigators said Wallace Burns, 45, of Indianapolis (pictured), fled the scene but was later caught by a K-9 officer and taken into custody. Burns reportedly broke into a nearby residential duplex after stabbing the victim, and attempted to rob a resident.
Police said no injuries were reported at the second crime scene, and that's where officers arrested Burns.
Police said Burns faces a preliminary charge of murder and is awaiting a final charging decision by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office. He's being held in the arrestee processing center, where he has no bond for his release.
Police did not release information on what may have prompted the stabbing.
