Man involved in crash killing Castle High School student turns himself into police

GREENE COUNTY, Ind. – The man involved in a crash that killed three people from Newburgh, IN, including a Castle High School student, turned himself into police Saturday morning.

Mason Hartke, 19, of Jasper, IN turned himself into Greene County authorities after a warrant was filed for his arrest, according to Indiana State Police.

The three people were killed Nov. 13 after leaving the Music for All band competition in downtown Indianapolis: David Rinehart, 46, Ruth Rinehart, 74, and Sophie Rinehart, 17.

Indiana State Police found the family's car and an inverted pickup truck on the west side of I-69 near the 103-mile marker.

Investigators said a 2015 Honda Civic, driven by David was traveling southbound on the interstate when he struck a deer causing him to pull onto the outside shoulder and come to a stop.

Troopers said Hartke was driving a 2006 Chevrolet southbound on I-69 and for unknown reasons, left the southbound lanes of traffic and entered the outside shoulder, striking the parked Honda.

The Greene County Prosecutor charged him with three counts of operating while Intoxicated with a BAC greater than .08 causing death and three counts of reckless homicide.

Hartke's bond has been set at $60,000 according to police.

Josie Rinehart, 18, who was also in the Honda, suffered cuts and was taken to IU Health Bloomington.

Hartke suffered a fractured arm and went to the hospital.

ISP said the investigation is ongoing.

According to officials at Bands of America, Sophie was a member of the Castle High School band and performed numerous times during the competition held at Lucas Oil Stadium.
