INDIANAPOLIS - A man was killed Friday evening in a crash on Interstate 70 near downtown.

Indiana State Police said the crash happened about 7:10 p.m. in the westbound lanes between the north split and Keystone Avenue.

Investigators said Jessie Stewart, 70, of Indianapolis, was in the right lane before he abruptly made a hard left turn, crossed the westbound lanes and struck a concrete dividing wall.

Stewart was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"The investigating officer, Trooper Joseph Vela-Braxton, stated open alcohol beverage containers were found inside the vehicle and felt that alcohol could be a contributing factor in this fatal crash," ISP Sgt. Rich Myers said.

The left lane where the crash occurred was closed during the investigation.
