CLOVERDALE, Ind. - A man who was arrested late last year after authorities found his 10-year-old stepson had been confined to a room without food or water has accepted a plea agreement.
Putnam County Superior Court officials said Wednesday that Michael Shane Witt, 34, has agreed to plead guilty to a neglect of a dependent charge.
In exchange, prosecutors agreed to drop a domestic battery charge.
Investigators said Witt reported a disturbance at a home he shared with his estranged wife and six children in late December.
When officers arrived, they said they found a back room that reeked of urine and feces. Children in the home told investigators that their parents sent them to the room as punishment, often for long periods of time.
Police said they found that the children were forced to use the restroom on a stool with a hole cut out of it placed over a 5-gallon bucket.
After his arrest, Witt claimed he was being held because of a government conspiracy.
A sentencing hearing was set for May 29.
