VERNON, Ind. - A judge has sentenced a southern Indiana man to 70 years in prison for fatally shooting his ex-wife and wounding her daughter.
A Jennings County jury convicted 64-year-old James Sowder of Seymour in May of voluntary manslaughter, burglary and other charges in connection with the 2012 shooting that killed 64-year-old Candice Sowder and seriously wounded then-42-year-old Regina Johnson at their home near North Vernon.
The Republic of Columbus reports a judge ordered that Sowder serve consecutive 35-year sentences for the manslaughter and burglary convictions. He was originally charged with murder and attempted murder, but jurors convicted him of the lesser charges.
County Prosecutor Alan Marshall says Sowder had several previous misdemeanor convictions, including two counts of battery against his ex-wife.
