IMPD investigating 3 homicides in 24 hours

Police have identified all 3 victims

INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis police are investigating three apparently unrelated homicides on the north side Saturday night.

Just before 5 p.m., IMPD officers were dispatched to the 3500 block of Graceland Avenue. The caller told police he had been involved a disturbance inside his house and that shots had been fired toward the backyard.

As officers searched the area, an unresponsive male was found in a rear alley of the residence with at least one gunshot wound.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel.

Authorities later identified the victim as 18-year-old Markeewann Ward.

Police transported several individuals to IMPD headquarters for questioning.

At approximately 7:37 p.m., IMPD officers responded to a report of a person shot on the 3600 block of N. Gladstone Avenue. Police arrived to find an unresponsive male lying in the yard of a residence with at least one gunshot wound.

The victim, later identified as a 23-year-old Dominique Butler, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were also investigating a third death on the city's north side.

IMPD was called to a house in the 400 block of West 26th Street just after 9:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a man dead inside the home. Police said the victim had head injuries, but it was unclear if he had been shot.

The victim was later identified as 47-year-old Terry Day. Detectives confirmed his death was being investigated as a criminal homicide.

The Marion County Coroner’s office will determine a cause of death after performing an initial autopsy, police said.
