INDIANAPOLIS -- Officials with the Marion County Jail say they are in crisis mode, looking for any way to keep criminals behind bars.

But Marion County Sheriff John Layton says it's harder than you might think.

He's warned officials about overcrowding at the Marion County Jail for more than a year now.

On Monday, he met with the Criminal Justice Planning Council to figure out ways to find more space.

Layton said the last thing they want to have to do is buy more jail beds, but at this point there's no way around it.

"It's a different day," he said. "It's getting a little tougher out there. We have to get a little tougher too and if it takes a little more money that's what it's going to have to do. At least for now until we can pull back the layers and see if there's some savings here or there."

The sheriff says the committee has to find a quick solution to this problem and focus on finding a long term answer down the road.
