Marion County Sheriff's Department deputy Matthew Milharcic arrested on drunken driving charge

Milharcic pulled over in Hendricks County

HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. - A Marion County sheriff's deputy was arrested overnight in Hendricks County on suspicion of driving drunk.

Matthew Milharcic, 58, of Avon, was driving an unmarked Marion County Sheriff’s Department vehicle in the 9700 block of East County Road 100 North when he drove off the road twice and crossed the center line, police said.

The Hendricks County deputy said Milharcic had slurred speech, glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol.

Milharcic's blood-alcohol content tested at 0.21 percent, nearly three times the legal limit to drive in Indiana.

Milharcic was preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Marion County Sheriff John Layton told RTV6 that Milharcic has been with the department for 37 years.
He called the arrest unfortunate, and thanked Hendricks County sheriff's deputies for getting Milharcic off the road without incident.

Milharcic has been suspended without pay and will likely be fired, Layton said.

Milharcic is one of 19 Marion County deputies who live out of the county and drive-take home cars, Layton said. They pay $100 a month for the vehicle.
