INDIANAPOLIS -- If you have Monday off due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, why not spend it in central Indiana at one of the events commemorating the day?
Downtown Indianapolis
Indianapolis Zoo - 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The zoo will be opening for free on Monday, and some of the more winter-ready animals will be available to be viewed.
Indiana State Museum - 10 a.m.–5 p.m. The museum will be open to the public for free. Guests can watch some of King's speeches. The day will focus on celebrating the legacy of equal rights.
Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art - 10 a.m.–5 p.m. The museum will be open for free if you bring a non-perishable food item for Gleaner's Food Bank.
NCAA Hall of Champions - 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Admission is free if guests bring a non-perishable food item for Gleaner's Food Bank.
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis - 10 a.m.–5 p.m. The Griot Drum Ensemble will offer storytelling and performances to anybody at the museum. Admission is free for the day.
Indiana Historical Society - 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Admission is free, but guests are invited to help pack care packages for Wheeler Mission. Anybody at the event can watch a short play about Robert F. Kennedy's speech the night King was assassinated.
Rhythm! Discovery Center - 11 a.m. The Jazz Foundation is hosting a kid-friendly jazz concert in celebration of King.
IMAX Theater - 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Admission is free on Monday. The theatER will be showing "Hubble: The IMAX Experience" throughout the day. There is limited seating capacity.
Indiana DNR
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is inviting the public to volunteer at Indiana State Parks on Monday.
Whitestown
The town will have an Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration for the first time in the town's history. The town will show some of King's "I Have a Dream" speech. It begins at 10 a.m. at the municipal complex.
Anderson
The city will be commemorating King in the Paramount Theatre at noon. The keynote address will be given by Anderson native Ashlee Davis, who is a advocate for the minority community.
