INDIANAPOLIS -- Ever wonder what happens to bikes that are left unclaimed around the city?

Mayor Joe Hogsett and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will be donating 50 bikes that have been sitting unclaimed in the IMPD's property room for a year to a good cause.

The bikes will go to Freewheelin', an Indianapolis youth organization to teach children about life skills, health habits and leadership.

Before this donation, bikes left unclaimed had been scrapped.

Freewheelin's Earn-a-Bike program pairs kids between the ages of 10 and 18 with a mentor to learn bike mechanic skills and life skills like perseverance, problem-solving and accountability. When the kids finish the program, the get a bike, a lock and a helmet.
