SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. -- One person is dead and a second seriously injured after a multi-vehicle crash in Shelby County Monday morning.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m., near the intersection of State Road 44 and County Road 625 West.

According to  the Shelby County Sheriff's Department a man driving a blue Dodge van sideswiped another vehicle on S.R. 44 before becoming involved in at least three other accidents.

Investigators say the van continued west on S.R. 44 after sideswiping the second vehicle and then hit a third vehicle head-on. While the van was sitting idle in the road it was struck by a fourth vehicle which pushed it into a fifth vehicle.

The driver of the van was flown to Methodist Hospital along with the driver of the third vehicle.

The driver of the van died from his injuries.

The condition of the driver of the third vehicle is not known at this time.

The accident remains under investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.
