INDIANAPOLIS -- If you heard some very loud noises just before 1 p.m. Friday afternoon, it was for the memorial service for former Indiana Governor Edgar Whitcomb.

He died last week at 98 years old.

Whitcomb was governor from 1969 to 1973.

The procession traveled from the Indiana War Memorial to the Statehouse for a public memorial service at noon.

The service was followed by cannon salute and a 21-gun rifle salute.

There will also be a military flyover on Monument Circle.

"People in the downtown area should expect traffic delays before, during and after the Memorial Service and should not be alarmed upon hearing the echo of the Howitzer cannon fire as well as the echo of the rifle fire," a press release from the Indiana State Police said.

There was a solemn tribute Thursday for former Indiana Governor Edgar Whitcomb.
