SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- No matter how many “Draft Mitch” efforts there might be, the former governor says he is not interested.

“When people bring up that presidency, I always say I held out and got a better job,” Mitch Daniels said in an interview with RTV6’s Katie Heinz on Indy This Week. “There are a lot of people who are troubled with the choices they have and they haven’t at least gotten comfortable with either of the front runners, so I know that leads to a lot of idle speculation.

Daniels was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway last week as part of his current job as president of Purdue University, at the M-STEM3 Student Fair, an attempt to steer high school students toward science and engineering careers.

He doesn’t like to talk about partisan politics as much now, and he was vague when asked about his thoughts about this year’s race between his successor, Gov. Mike Pence, and John Gregg.

“I hope that our state will continue to be a place that moves forward economically,” Daniels said. “Everything starts with that. We need people earning money in family-sustaining jobs. If you have that, everything else becomes simpler. I think those are goals both candidates share, and may the best person win.”
