INDIANAPOLIS - Felony charges have been filed against a mother and her boyfriend in the death of a 15-month-old, officials said.
Nikita Dunn, 23, and her boyfriend Darrell Daniels Jr., 27, each face a felony count of neglect of a dependent after the May 4 death of Dunn's toddler.
Police were dispatched to the 600 block of South Marion Avenue near the city's southwest side back in May, where they found the toddler unresponsive.
Prosecutors announced Monday that the two would face charges in the baby's death.
The autopsy ruled that the baby died of blunt force trauma and had internal hemorrhaging.
Officials said the injuries could have been treated and the child would have lived if Dunn and Daniels had sought medical care for the baby.
Another child, a 3-year-old girl, was removed from the home and placed in foster care.
Dunn and Daniels are being held on $100,000 bond each and both were expected to appear in court later in the week.
Neighbors said that Daniels had a history of abuse.
"The neighbor lady on the other side had mentioned it and the girlfriend before the one, the baby's mother, they'd gotten into it one day and she said he'd abused her and she told everyone if you women coming up here, let them know that he's very abusive and aggressive," neighbor Shelby Rybolt said.
