INDIANAPOLIS - Warren Township officials were investigating an incident involving a 5-year-old student after a mother claimed her daughter was dragged by a school bus.
The mother said her child’s backpack got caught in the bus door as the driver started to drive away Monday.
"I was walking down the street here and saw the bus pulling up and as the bus took off, my daughter was being dragged underneath the bus. So I screamed and the bus driver stopped. She just has a few abrasions to her arm," the mother said.
A school spokesman said the student was not actually dragged, but that the bus did start to pull away as the backpack was stuck in the door.
"The bus driver noticed the girl's backpack caught in the door just as he released the brake. He did not push the accelerator pedal. The young lady was actually able to disengage from her backpack and pulled at it, trying to free it from the door," the spokesman said in a statement.
The girl's mother said she does not blame the bus driver, but she has removed a tag that was hanging from the top of the backpack.
Officials said the driver was placed on administrative leave for the duration of the investigation.
