INDIANAPOLIS -- The Monon Trail will be undergoing major construction soon.

Indy Parks spokesperson Ronetta Spaulding said Saturday 10 miles of the trail from 96th Street through downtown Indianapolis will be widened by four feet and re-paved.

The construction does not have a hard start date, but is expected to be done in sections throughout all 10 miles of the trail in Indy over the next three years with a targeted completion year of 2020.

The trail will be widened by two feet on each side, except on bridges and at intersections.

Spaulding says the improvements are needed because the trail gets such extensive use, and more room is needed to accommodate.

Funding for the construction will come from a combination of local and federal sources, but Spaulding did not elaborate on what those sources are.

The construction does not affect the Monon Trail in Hamilton County.

The first sections of the trail opened in 1996 and it has been lengthened since then, but never widened.
