MOORESVILLE, Ind. --  It’s almost exactly 1,000 miles from Mooresville, Indiana to Houston, and most of the children at Paul Hadley School in Mooresville have never been to the Texas city.

But, in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, members of the Hadley boys and girls cross country team helped their fellow runners at Bob Lanier Middle School, which is in an area of Houston hit hard by the recent storm.

Many Lanier students are from families who suffered significant Harvey-related losses and that includes members of the school’s cross country team.

It’s hard to race cross country without running shoes and some of the Lanier team members lost their shoes in the hurricane.

The Hadley cross country team held a recent “run-a-thon” to raise money for new shoes.

Running for donations from parents, school staff and local residents, team members completed as many miles as possible in one hour.

Just over $2,000 was raised – money that will buy new shoes for the kids in Houston.

Team member Cannon Mills finished first with eight miles in one hour.
