INDIANAPOLIS - Mourners gathered for the funeral of an Indianapolis police officer who authorities say was slain by her ex-husband and fellow officer who then killed himself.
A row of officers in dress uniforms saluted as Officer Kimberlee Carmack's flag-draped casket was carried Wednesday morning into Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral. Her funeral was followed by a police procession and burial at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Investigators say Sgt. Ryan Anders shot the 45-year-old officer on Thursday after breaking into her home. The couple divorced in October after a six-year relationship.
Carmack was a 20-year veteran of the police force and her son is a current officer. Carmack was remembered as a person who cared deeply for the community and always went above and beyond.
Her loss has been especially difficult for the entire Metro police force.
"It shows we're human we come from the same society we have the same challenges and we must recognize that our police officers do an outstanding job, but we're human," IMPD Chief Rick Hite said.
After the formal ceremony, Hite presented Carmack's son with the flag that draped his mother's casket.
"We like to think that in this case it's a little different that the legacy lives on through her son and she'll continue on through him and whenever we speak her name, it'll be in fondness and understanding that he in fact is a part of her traditional legacy, and we honor that and make sure he understands that," Hite said.
Officials say Anders' funeral set for Thursday isn't considered an official police service.
