MUNCIE, Ind. - Muncie is planning to spend $1 million to repair and improve its aging White River levee.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have set the standards for the levee. Investigations completed in 2009 and 2012 found that aging storm-water pipes, an unauthorized residential garage and trees weakened the levee, the Star Press of Muncie reported.

Muncie Sanitary District administrator Bill Smith said the levee improvements will be paid for with storm-water management fees paid by property owners to the county. The project is not expected to cause an increase in fees.
