INDIANAPOLIS -- You have likely seen video of the brawl between the Pike and Ben Davis girls basketball teams.

You know who else saw it? The head of women's basketball for the NCAA. She met with some of the Pike players Friday.

"Those split second decisions can change the rest of their lives," Anucha Browne said.

Those decisions led to the IHSAA to cancel the rest of the basketball season for both teams. A harsh punishment, and one that Browne says fits the crime.

"Taking away the rest of their season was a way of saying 'No, this is not, we won't stand for this. That was deplorable behavior and we expect better,'" she said.

Browne explained that better means thinking beyond one's self. It's serving others. For the girls in the fight, it's having the presence of mind to walk away as some of their teammates did.

For the adults in the room, it was a message they hope sticks with the students longer than the consequences of a few regretful moments.
