JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. - A Johnson County man was arrested Wednesday night after he got into a fight with his neighbor over the placement of a porch light, officials said.
Scott Keith, 44, was arrested on a charge of battery, but police said the entire scenario could have been avoided.
Officials said Keith had been drinking and became angry after neighbor Doug Bristow put up a new porch light a few days earlier.
Keith went to Bristow’s house to confront him because he said the new light was pointed directly into his house and he didn’t like it, police said.
"He came on my property and hit me. That's not right at all. If you are gonna get drunk, stay on your property, don't bother your neighbors," Bristow said.
Bristow and Keith have known each other for most of their lives. In fact, Bristow was the best man at Keith's wedding.
Authorities said despite their lengthy relationship, a better way to solve the impasse would have been to call police.
"Better us going to that door and asking that neighbor to come to the door than you going over and getting into a fist fight , a squabble or a physical altercation with that neighbor," Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox said.
Keith was released on $1,000 bond. Bristow said he has no intention of removing the light or moving to another home.
